Emma Meiko Candon’s novel follows up Visions: “The Duel.” We explore the world of the Ronin and how this story tells a different version of Star Wars.
Star Wars: Visions ushered in a new form of Star Wars story telling set in the rich world of Japanese anime. The stories deviated from traditional Star Wars storytelling and offered viewers a new look at the galaxy of Star Wars through a Japanese lens. The first of those shorts, “The Duel,” has now spawned a follow-up novel. Emma Mieko Candon’s novel “Ronin” follows the path of its titular character in a Star Wars galaxy where the Jedi and Sith are not who we are familiar with. On this episode of Podcast Stardust, we delve into this novel and that world.
In this fully armed and operational episode, we discuss:
- How Ronin is a challenge to read, but a rewarding experience,
- The ways the Force in Ronin differs from our experience in traditional Star Wars stories,
- Why the Sith and the Jedi aren’t the same types of characters we are used to,
- The state of the galaxy in Ronin,
- Samurai and other Japanese influences that shaped the Star Wars story presented in Ronin, and
- Whether and how this book enhanced our consumption of “The Duel.”
