The Week in Geek 1/14/17 – 1/19/17

by Courtney Martin

Drew Barrymore eats some human flesh in the Santa Clarita Diet, Game of Thrones rumors, and Chewbacca rips off an arm. Are you needing more Rogue One action? There’s a new comic book on the way for that! King Kong looms large in the new Kong: Skull Island trailer. This IS the Week in Geek.

Welcome to The Week in Geek! Each week, I’ll be compiling the stories that made waves and the ones I might have missed. Got a suggestion for a good story? Shoot an email to weekingeek@retrozap.com. Let’s dig in!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Coming to Comics

This week Marvel announced it will do a comic book adaptation of Rogue One. It will be a six book series, which kicks off in April. The book’s writer, Jody Houser, said the comics will feature some extra scenes that did not make it into the film. This is exciting news – I for one can’t wait to see some new character interactions. I didn’t pick up The Force Awakens comic adaptation, but I sure will pick up this series. More Cassian, Jyn, K2-SO, Baze, Chirrut and Bodhi? Awesome!

Chewie vs. Unkar Plutt

“Always let the Wookiee win!” Sage advice from Han Solo, as in the newly released Force Awakens deleted scene shows how bad things could have gotten for Unkar Plutt. The scene features Rey bumping into Plutt at Maz Kanata’s castle. He’s none to kind to Rey, and threatens to make her pay for what she did to his junkyard when leaving Jakku. But Chewie is there to save her – make threats of his own. Now, the scene doesn’t show what the novelization provides, and I’m kind of glad it doesn’t. Here is the text from the novelization, describing what happened next: “Grabbing the thrusting arm, a roaring Chewbacca twisted and ripped it off at the shoulder, throwing the dismembered limb clear across the room. Looking down at himself, Plutt let out a scream of agony…”  Too violent for the film, in my opinion. But still kind of cool knowing Chewie doesn’t make idle threats.

TV News

Drew Barrymore is on a new diet! Why is that news? Barrymore’s new Netflix show, Santa Clarita Diet, debuts February 3. Before I lose you, it’s not about dieting. It’s about zombies. Barrymore plays an undead suburban real estate agent. And being undead means she needs human flesh to survive. She wants to keep her normal life, but things may get, um, messy. This seems like a quirky, fun show. I’ll be interested to see how it does with audiences.  See the trailer here.

Rumor Time – Game of Thrones

With Game of Thrones being gone for a while now, it seems Internet readers are clamoring for anything GoT newsworthy. Here’s a small, but interesting, rumor from this week. The actor who played Walder Frey (David Bradley) has updated his United Artists resume to include a credit as Frey in the upcoming season 7. This is interesting as Frey was Arya Stark’s first kill when she returned to Westeros. So, what does this mean? I would speculate he returns in a vision of some sort, most likely on of Bran’s. That would make the most sense. The man is dead, so he’s not likely to be in any new scenes. A second, but less likely I think, option would be Arya using Frey’s face in her assassination abilities. I’m not sure on what other realistic possibilities there would be for Frey’s return.

Kong: Skull Island

This week the second trailer for Kong: Skull Island was released. It features a lot of very large animals. And some excellent action sequences.  Everything one would expect from a King Kong movie. The film debuts March 10. See the trailer here.
