Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Pop in Awesome Mixtape Vol. 2–The gang is back!  The trailer gives an assembly of the original Guardians, and introduces new ones; Yondu and Nebula (now good-guys) and new recruit Mantis (Pom Klementieff). It also features Kurt Russell as Ego, a cosmic being who is also Quill’s father. The movie has the group struggling to stay together while fighting for the galaxy, as well as trying to unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s parentage. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will fly into theaters May 5, 2017.

Logan

Changing gears to a more serious comic book film, the final trailer for Logan delivers more evocative emotions than many of the other trailers. The clip features another memorable song, “Amazing Grace”, and gives a few new glimpses of old-man Logan (Hugh Jackman), elderly Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), and young X-23 (Dafne Keen). This movie is going to be a heartfelt, emotional send-off to Jackman’s Wolverine. Logan, directed by James Mangold, appears in theaters March 3rd, 2017.

Pacific Rim: Uprising

While there’s no trailer for the new Pacific Rim film, there is a brand new photo courtesy of John Boyega. He shared the photo via social media, with the caption: “I am Pentecost 2018, #PacificRimUprising.” Looks pretty cool! Check out the picture below. The movie is currently filming, with a scheduled release date of February 23, 2018.

Stranger Things 2

YES! The highly anticipated Season 2 of Stranger Things is coming! It appears that killing the Demogorgon last season didn’t quite take care of the evil of the Upside Down.  Season two premieres on Netflix Halloween 2017. Watch the awesome trailer here.

Iron Fist

Marvel’s newest Netflix original series, Iron Fist, got the trailer treatment this week. The show features billionaire Danny Rand (Finn Jones) as he returns to New York City after being missing for years. It follows Rand has he tries to reconnect with his family and reconcile his past. (Sort-of Batman-esque). Rand has the ability to summon the power of the Iron Fist, and with this and his martial arts skills he takes on criminals corrupting NYC. This series is part of the build up to Marvel’s The Defenders. Iron Fist premieres with 13 episodes on Netflix on March 17, 2017.

Jack is Back

Samurai Jack that is! After 12 years between seasons, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Samurai Jack has returned. Within the universe it has been 50 years; Jack is the same, still trying to return home, but as things around him change he has become a bit unstable. He’s also on the run from dangerous warriors, and the whole trailer is pretty impressive. The limited series debuts on Adult Swim March 11th.

X-Men

Fox has a new X-Men live action television series in the works (in addition to Legion). The pilot will be directed by none other than Bryan Singer, with production set to begin March 13 in Dallas, Texas. The series will focus on two parents who find out their children have mutant powers. They flee from the government and join forces with other mutants in a fight for survival. The series is yet untitled at this point.

Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel

Comic book crossover time!  This week StarWars.com and The Star Wars Show revealed Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel, a five-issue crossover where Luke Skywalker reluctantly teams up with archaeologist Dr. Aphra to investigate the Screaming Citadel, a nefarious castle located on the edge of space. The crossover starts in May with the Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel by Kieron Gillen and artist Marco Checchetto, then continues in Jason Aaron’s Star Wars #31, then Gillen’s Doctor Aphra #7. It will continue back and forth from then on between the Star Wars and Doctor Aphra comic books.

Richard Hatch

A sad final note to this week’s news: Battlestar Galactica star Richard Hatch passed away at age 71 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Best known for his roles as Captain Apollo in the original BSG, and then Tom Zarek on the SyFy BSG remake. Even before the franchise reboot, Mr. Hatch was a champion of Battlestar Galactica, co-writing seven novels extending the story of the original series.  Mr. Hatch was a staple at many comic cons and by all accounts loved his fans. Rest in peace, Captain.
