Podcast Stardust #279: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO

by Podcast Stardust

Before The Clone Wars and the prequels, there was Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO. We dive into the vintage animated series on this episode.

Although many Star Wars fans are familiar with Genndy Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars and Dave Filoni’s The Clone Wars, many may not know that they were not the first Star Wars animated television series. Indeed, the first two animated series debuted in the 80s on Saturday mornings. One series focused on the Ewoks, and the other featured R2-D2 and C-3PO in a series appropriately titled Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO. On this episode of Podcast Stardust, we look back at the vintage animated Star Wars series that is now available on Disney+. Did it work for us? Did it work for you? Join us and we break down the history, influence, and peculiarities that make Droids a unique Star Wars series.

On this fully armed and operational episode, we discuss:

  • The history of Droids,
  • The restrictions that Droids faced as a Saturday morning cartoon,
  • How Droids influenced the Star Wars that followed,
  • C-3PO’s enhanced range of motion in this series,
  • The style of animation,
  • The quality of the stories, and more.
