Cantina Conversations: Rob Hingley (“Bucket” from The Toasters)

by James Volpe

James Volpe, The Ska Geek, is back in the Cantina with another interview with the lead singer of one of his favorite ska bands, The Toasters. Rob Hingley, aka “Bucket” is known for work in one of the longest running ska bands and starting his own record label, the legendary Moon Ska Records in the US and Europe.

I decided to hit up Rob after hearing he was a long-time fan of Star Wars in a recent interview.  We chatted in the Cantina about why he is a fan and what he wants to see in future Star Wars movies. Let me get you a drink and let’s hear is a little more about Buck’s love of Star Wars. But, we must be cautious. This place can be a little rough.

What is your earliest Star Wars memory?

I had the opportunity to go see the UK Premiere of Empire Strikes Back in wrap around Dolby sound in the cinema on Tottenham Court Road. Truly a mind-blowing experience at the time.

Why is Star Wars so enduring, in your opinion?

Since I was working at Forbidden Planet in London in 1979, Star Wars was obviously front and centre not only because it was at the cutting edge of film technology but also because it had become a revolution in terms of how the general public looked at the Science Fiction genre.

What is it about Star Wars that resonated with you?

The longevity of the brand is precisely because it has generated so many loyal fans in a sense it’s the same as Ska Music.

Who is your favorite character and why?

Boba Fett. I like Boba as he is an enigmatic character and a badass. His role in the SW universe needs to be elaborated.

Has Star Wars ever come into any memorable moments in the studio or on the road?

No real SW tie-ins on the road, although Jeremy Patton our label manager is a HUGE fan.

What do you want to see in future Star Wars films?

I would like to see the whole story finally on film. More development of the Boba Fett character who was always one of my favourites.
