Cantina Conversations: Mike Geraci of The Abruptors

by James Volpe

James Volpe (The Ska Geek) talks to Mike Geraci of The Abruptors about his love of Star Wars and its influence on their music.

Hello there. The Ska Geek here, graphic designer to the RetroZap stars, bringing you interviews with some of my favorite bands focusing on their Star Wars fandom and its influence on their music.

Let’s head to the Cantina. We must be cautious. This place can be a little rough.

So to kick things off here in the Cantina, I caught up with Mike Geraci lead singer of the ska band The Abruptors from New York. Mike is a long time fan of Star Wars and recently captured my attention with posts about his love of Rogue One on Facebook and pictures of his Star Wars tattoos.

Let me get you a drink and let’s hear is a little more about Mike’s love of Star Wars.

What is your earliest Star Wars memory?

My earliest memory of Star Wars was when I was about 3. My friends dad brought out a VHS of A New Hope and said, “Ok guys, you’re gonna love this!” I was hooked instantly.

Why is Star Wars so enduring, in your opinion?

I believe it’s because at the time it was like nothing that had ever come before. Part sci-fi opera, part fantasy. The special effects were insane for 77. I also think the story, although told before, (good vs. evil) was done in such a way that it captured the minds of many different generations.

What is it about Star Wars that resonated with you?

I would have to say the characters. At times I felt like Luke, alone in a galaxy feeling like you’re meant for better things. Sometimes like Han, always doing my own thing my way. Even today, I connected so much with certain characters from Rogue One. Jyn Erso, rebelling but still trying to do what’s right. I still live by that everyday.

Who is your favorite character and why?

Honestly I can’t answer that question. I could give a cliché answer like Boba Fett or an odd one like Tenel Ka Djo. But there are just too many. As I said before I love different characters because I feel I can relate to them. Recently I’ve added Chirrut Imwe, Jyn Erso, K2S0 and Cassian Andor to the very long list I already have.

Has Star Wars ever come into any memorable moments in the studio or on the road?

Millions. From driving to NYC quoting Star Wars all the way there or flying to San Francisco arguing if The Force Awakens sucks or not. We sometimes make lightsaber noises when recording, or do the Darth Vader voice in the microphone. I can’t remember a time where we don’t bring up star wars. Recently we played a show in Erie, and half the way there I was gushing about my love for Rogue One. I wouldn’t shut up. I was repeating lines like a mad man.

What do you want to see in future Star Wars films?

Personally, I wish they would take a tip from Gareth Edwards. He made a Star Wars movie that made me feel like the first time I saw the original trilogy. I actually cried when I saw it in the theater. To me, it was so perfect. I’ve probably watched it about 30 times now since its release.

So, to be more specific, cut down on the CGI (don’t get rid of it but use more practical effects). Be more original has to be the number one thing I wanna see. TFA was such a rip off of ANH, the characters were bland and the villain wasn’t worthy of Vader, Director Krennic or even Maul. I know I’m getting off on a rampage here, but originality, more interesting characters, more practical effects and let’s get off Skywalkers and Solos. There’s a galaxy of amazing characters out there. Let them shine.
