The Infinity Stones

The long awaited trailer for Avengers: Infinity War landed this week, and it did not disappoint! So much action, so many Marvel characters, so many beards! Let us dive into the trailer for a breakdown of all the awesomeness.

The film centers around Thanos (Josh Brolin), a supervillian descending upon Earth to gather the Infinity Stones, which will grant him omnipotence and omniscience. As Thanos brings his army to dominate Earth, the Avengers come together to stop him.

So, what exactly are the Infinity Stones? In the trailer Thanos already has the Infinity Gauntlet, the glove that the six stones fit into. This graphic below (via Reddit) gives a good breakdown of each stone:

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has basically been building to this film over the years. As shown in the graphic, each film in the MCU has dealt with an Infinity Stone in some form. The only stone that has not yet been found is the Soul Stone. In the trailer Thanos is shown to be attacking Earth, and specifically the Black Panther’s home of Wakanda. Since the film Black Panther is the final MCU movie to debut ahead of Avengers: Infinity War, it begs reason that the Soul Stone resides in Wakanda.

“In time, you will know what it’s like to lose.”

While the trailer begins with Nick Fury’s words of hope, to bring a team together to fight when needed, Thanos comes in with a speech that spells doom for Earth’s mightiest heroes. He says there is no running from it, destiny will still arrive–“To feel so desperately that you are right, yet to fail all the same.” Powerful words. The Avengers are in for the fight of their lives. And the trailer shows this– a battle on the fields of Wakanda, Iron Man and Dr. Strange fighting together, Spider-Man getting choke slammed by Thanos, and The Vision being torn apart, his Infinity Stone being ripped from his head. Make no mistake, there are going to be losses among the heroes.

Enter new friends

The main Avengers group, even after Civil War, come together in the trailer to face Thanos. But they have recruited new help as well. Joining Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk, Thor, Falcon, the Vision, and Scarlet Witch are Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Spider-Man, The Winter Soldier, War Machine, and The Guardians of the Galaxy. Plus other warriors from Wakanda and Dr. Strange’s universe. Quite the list. All to battle Thanos and his army.

As the trailer continues, Thanos is gathering the Infinity Stones. He has the blue (the Tesseract, which presumably Loki gives to him), and the purple stone (which was last seen locked safely away on Xandar in Guardians of the Galaxy). So, does Loki join forces with Thanos? It sure seems like it from the trailer–Loki steps over what seems to be Asgardian bodies to hand over the Tesseract. Yikes, that is quite the back-stab. And how did the Power stone get off Xandar? Is Xandar and Nova Core even still around? Will Thanos get all of the Infinity Stones during the film? Or is the MCU poised for a two-part Infinity War set?

Lots of questions arise from just the first trailer. And at the end of the trailer, while the triumphant Avengers theme plays, it seems ominous. Is this the last time the Avengers will be together? Is there a new hope with the Guardians of the Galaxy arriving? The questions can only be answered when the film arrives, May 2018.
