ARGcast #185: Saving the Shenmue Series w/ Matt Conn

by RetroZap Staff

Game developer friend Matt Conn joins us to celebrate the release of Shenmue III by looking back at the series that Yu Suzuki and fans refuse to let die.

Get revenge and collect those capsule toys, ARGonauts! Game developer Matt Conn comes back on the show to look back at the 20-year-old Shenmue series in celebration of the long-awaited third title’s release. Why was the original game so important? How was Yu Suzuki keeping the franchise alive despite inadequate sales? What makes Shenmue III feel like no time has passed? We get into all that plus responses from listeners like YOU!

Our news this week starts with a new Half-Life game announced… but for VR. That’s followed by N64 sales soaring, R.O.B. making a comeback, and Chrono Cross gets the orchestral treatment. Robert also brings up a late-breaking story on a new Crash Bandicoot possibly in the works.

The Stage of History takes us to Hong Kong in Shenmue II. Robert then jumps into his forklift in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing during Obscura. And don’t forget to grab our game code giveaways for Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles and ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove.
