Death Star DLC

This week was Gamescom in Germany. Gamescom is essentially the European equivalent to E3 that happens in Los Angeles in June. Lucasfilm and EA were well represented and gave a lot of news and info on the future of Battlefront. Coming in September is the long-awaited Death Star DLC. It will introduce an all new game mode, called Battle Station. This is definitely the most ambitious undertaking that EA has taken since the release last year.

There will be three separate phases to the mode that will need to be completed in order to move to the next. Phase 1 involves the Rebel Alliance trying to take down a Star Destroyer while the Empire attempts to defend them. Then moving to phase 2, the fighting goes into the actual Death Star itself. The Rebels must escort a droid out of a docking bay while the Imperials try to prevent them. Finally phase 3 is the one you’ve all been waiting for. TRENCH RUN. That’s right, the famous scene from A New Hope now playable in next-gen video game form. In phase 3, you’ll be able to take control of new Hero vehicles, Luke Skywalker’s Red-5 and Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced.

It’ll be interesting to say the least, in how long this game mode is. Seemingly it should hold for a lot of lengthy battles depending on how long each phase takes. A tough task will be to balance out the length of each phase and if each one has a built in timer. Will it be like Supremacy and Turning point with each section has a certain time to complete the objective? Or, will it be more along the lines of Walker Assault where there is no time-limit and the mode moves forward regardless?

Battlefront VR: X-wing

The Death Star DLC wasn’t all that came out of the convention. The all-new Battlefront VR addition got a name change and new info. Rogue One: X-wing VR Mission will be coming to the new PSVR this fall. The expansion will be available for free to all who already own Battlefront. While a list price for those who don’t own the game hasn’t been announced yet. The game is being developed by EA in conjunction with Criterion Games. Senior producer, James Svensson from Criterion, detailed on the game:

“Being in a fight with a Star Destroyer is not a situation an X-wing pilot wants to find themselves in, but that’s where the player ends up. The player will have to keep their wits about them, with intense battle ensuing from every direction, to keep them and their wingmen alive as they complete a critical mission for the Rebellion.”

This week on the Star Wars Show and the After Show, Andi and Scott talked about playing the VR experience. Hearing their excitement over being able to play it and how much detail is involved is crazy. I probably won’t have the financial capital to purchase the PSVR when it’s released. I definitely will want to play this game if I get the chance.

Star Wars x Beastie Boys

When new movie trailers are released, fans often make their own versions. For some reason, the Beastie Boys serve as the soundtrack. The band is a huge inspiration for JJ Abrams, who included a bunch of references in The Force Awakens. The use of the band also was a crossover over into JJ’s run on the new Star Trek. The song “Sabotage” (Sabataage?) is a staple in the new Trek trilogy as a result some fans used it for a Rogue One trailer. While there is not much known about the story of the film, seems like the song does well to temper that.

Using the just released trailer, behind-the-scenes sizzle, and the GMA teaser, this trailer dazzles. The inclusion of “Sabotage” gives everything a completely new feel and it’s pretty damn great. While the song certainly would never appear in the film, it does give everything a new and different feel. Chock up another reason why Star Wars fans are the best.
